Patient Stories

Learn more about some of the remarkable patients at Children's. While these brave children battle serious conditions, each shares a common story of hope, courage and determination. Be inspired by their resiliency. See how they received the gift of childhood from Children's and from philanthropists like you.

Gavin Smith is a garbage truck and pizza-loving 4-year-old whose battle with an aggressive form of cancer has touched thousands of people.  In March 2008, Gavin was diagnosed with a tumor in his brain and spine called atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor. The tumor was a third of the size of his entire brain and required emergency surgery.
James "Craig" Rowlett's parents first took him to an emergency room near their home in Dallas, where physicians said the 10-year-old had a minor stomach issue. Three days later, the Rowletts rushed Craig to the Emergency Department at Children’s.
After falling from her bike, Joanna Kwon, had the expected scrapes and bruises – no major injuries. Two days later, Joanna’s parents, noticing her lethargy, took her to the Emergency Department at Children’s at Legacy in Plano.
Mackinlee Waddell was born five weeks early with a small hole in her heart. Her heart was expected to heal on its own, yet at only two months old, Mackinlee’s heart muscle had weakened tremendously.
On Dec. 16, Liberty Ingram suddenly became listless with shallow breathing. Her condition quickly worsened to grand mal seizures. Today, Liberty relies on Children’s to stay ahead of Addison’s disease.
