Provide Fun and Education for Patients
The Child Life department helps to make sure patients and their families have the most positive hospital experience possible.
The staff helps explain medical procedures and illnesses in terms children can understand, take the patients on tours before surgery and assess how patients are adjusting to illness through "medical play." Books and medical dolls are used to provide information and education about medical procedures. Additionally, daily developmental activities are offered in our patient playrooms.
Child Life also creates unique experiences for patients, such as special events, celebrations, and holiday parties. Patients who spend their birthday in the hospital receive a birthday present from Children's; in addition, special holiday parties with cookie decorating provide a moment of joy for our hospitalized patients.
By providing opportunities for normalcy during a stressful time, the Child Life team is an invaluable support system for patients, their siblings and their parents.
These services are provided free of charge to our patients and are not reimbursed by insurance. Your generous donations help us provide these special services and more during more than 570,000 patient visits each year.
